In this case, the items I wanted to exclude were the ASUS Product Registration and ASUS AI Suite 3 software – the latter, especially, as I had found that it could cause real problems on other computers. I skipped the installation DVD for several reasons: I wanted those latest versions I didn’t want to clutter the system with superseded material and since I expected to be restoring backup images of this installation on other machines, I didn’t want to indulge an automated driver installation process that might include ASUS-specific OEM software. (At this point, the ASUS machine wasn’t yet able to go online I was using another computer for my downloads.) I chose instead to download the latest drivers from the ASUS motherboard’s support webpage. For that mobo, I could have started with the installation DVD that came with the motherboard. ![]() The motherboard in this case was an ASUS H97-PLUS, purchased in 2015. But for present purposes, involving an older motherboard from a reputable OEM, it seemed the best approach was probably to begin with drivers supplied by the OEM, and then let Windows Update update those if (as seemed unlikely) it had better and/or newer drivers. A review of discussions (at e.g., SuperUser, Reddit, ElevenForum) yielded the impression that this was not a settled matter. There was a question of whether to obtain those drivers from the OEM or through Microsoft’s Windows Update system. For instance, if the motherboard had SATA and USB ports, the OEM would probably provide SATA and USB drivers. The motherboard’s original equipment manufacturer (OEM) would produce software that would enable it to run Windows. As the center of a typical PC, the motherboard would tend to be the point of focus for most drivers. Microsoft ( 2022) defined a driver as a piece of software that enabled communication between the operating system and a device, typically a piece of hardware. ![]() But I didn’t always reboot immediately if that didn’t seem essential at the moment. Note: in most cases, this post does not report trivial steps (e.g., clicking OK or Next, when that was the only practical option restarting the computer, when a dialog said that a needed change would not be effective until I rebooted the system). The Conclusion provides an effective summary. This post describes the steps I took to insure that these Win7 installations included most if not all of the Win7 updates that were available as of June 2023. I was in the process of restoring and updating some old Windows 7 drive images, and was also setting up a new Win7 installation.
